Dear Families and Supporters,
As July unfolds and summer is in full swing, we hope you and your student are balancing relaxation with preparation. This is a key time to support your student as they continue their onboarding journey and get ready to join the UVM community in August. We're excited to partner with you during this important transition.
In partnership,
JP, Molly, and Hannah The New Student Orientation Team

July 1st Deadline Has Come and Gone - Now What?
The July 1st deadline for several health-related requirements has now passed, and the Health and Wellbeing team is currently reviewing student immunization records. If your student's immunization record currently says "pending" that means we have received the records and they are in the queue to be reviewed.
This review process typically takes about ten business days. Once your student’s records are reviewed and approved, the checklist item will automatically move to the “Completed” section of the New Student Checklist.
If it’s been more than ten business days and there hasn’t been an update, feel free to reach out to health@uvm.edu.
If you have not yet submitted immunization forms, please submit them as soon as possible. If forms are not submitted and complete before the beginning of the semester, your student may get a hold placed on their account.
If you did not submit your Health Insurance Decision/Waiver, your student will be enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) and it will appear on your student's bill. You can still submit the waiver, but it may take some time for it to be approved and for SHIP to be removed from your student's bill.

Semester Bills Coming Next Week
Student Financial Services (SFS) will send Fall 2026 semester bills on July 16th. Students and any designated authorized payers will receive an email notification when the bill was posted to the student account.
Establishing authorized payer access is part of the New Student Checklist. Your student will need to grant you this access in order for you to view the bill, make payments, and discuss the bill with UVM Student Financial Services.
*Reminder: There is an upcoming New Student Insight Session with Student Financial Services on July 20th at 7pm ET that will cover the billing process and commonly asked questions.

New Student Checklist - Making Progress?
The final items have been added to the New Student Checklist, and from here on out, it’s all about checking things off. To celebrate completion, students who complete certain items on their checklist will receive a pair of custom UVM Darn Tough socks, a Vermont favorite!
We know summer can be busy, and the checklist may feel overwhelming. Your encouragement can make a big difference. A quick check-in with your student can help keep them on track.
Speaking of new items on the checklist, there are two new checklist items that require some homework before arriving on campus.
For All New Students: UVM is committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive community. All incoming students are required to complete three online learning modules via Vector Solutions. The modules are accessible from each student’s checklist and include:
- Understanding Alcohol and Other Drugs
- Mental Wellbeing
- Sexual Violence Prevention for Undergraduates
For Students in Learning Communities (LC): Students recently received an eBook related to their LC theme. During New Student Orientation, they’ll engage in a required book discussion with faculty, staff, and peers. (Students in LASP will be receiving a hard copy book by mail.)

Guiding Families Through the Catamount Family Experience
As you and your student navigate this exciting transition to university life, we recommend looking at the Catamount Family Experience webpage, which offers a comprehensive guide tailored to new families and students.
Of particular importance is the Transition Guide, a good starting point for understanding what to expect and how to prepare during this time of transition.
We recommend focusing on a specific aspect of the guide: Getting Involved and Making Friends. This is an essential skill for students as they begin their university journey. Use this guide to initiateconversations with your student about how to build connections and practice interpersonal skills in new ways. We hope this will help you and your students will feel more confident and equipped for the exciting changes ahead.

When is Orientation for Families?
Our New Student Insight Sessions are the first step in the "Families & Supporters Orientation program" and are designed for both students and families. Can’t attend live? No problem - recordings are posted on our website as soon as they are available and captioned.
We will be hosting Families & Supporters Orientation on each Move-In Day (August 26th & 27th) from 3:00–5:30pm. After the hugs and goodbyes, join us for sessions focused on supporting your student’s transition and connecting with campus partners. No registration is required.

Planning for Move-In: August 26th or 27th
As of July 3rd, students can log into the housing portal to view their assigned Move-In date (August 26th or 27th) and time.
If your student is moving in August 26th, they will begin New Student Orientation Wednesday afternoon at 3:00. If your student is moving in on August 27th, they will begin orientation Thursday afternoon at 3:00. Don't worry - due to scheduling magic, all students, no matter their start date, will have the opportunity to attend the same sessions (just on different days) and be ready to start strong at UVM! Once they begin orientation, students will be in programing until the evening of August 30th.
Students in on campus Pre-Orientation Programs, as well as UVM TREK and UVM GO Montreal, will move in on the day their program starts and attend New Student Orientation when their program is completed.
Pro-Tip: Move-In Day and New Student Orientation are busy! If your family wants more time to celebrate this milestone, consider arriving a day or two before their assigned move-in date - or plan a celebration at home which is often less hectic and more affordable.

Wondering what your student might need in their room? Check out the Room Essentials list from University Housing (scroll down on this page to find it)!
Interested in shipping items to campus? Keep a few things in mind: * UVM cannot receive packages for new students before August 17th * Use the mailing address of your student's residence hall * Processing for packages can take a while, especially at the end of August when there is a high volume of packages coming into campus. Do not ship anything your student is going to need immediately. * Items will not be delivered to your student's room. When they have a package, they will be notified by email to pick it up in their residence hall office.
We have partnerships with several businesses that can help with dorm essentials and move-in: * MicroFridge for refrigerator and microwave rental * DormCo for room essentials (bedding, laundry bags, shower caddy, etc.) that can be picked up at the UVM Bookstore on move-in day * Storage Squad can receive shipped items before August 17th and deliver them to your student's room on move-in day

Starting Strong: Career Exploration Begins Now
Career exploration doesn’t begin senior year - it starts now. At UVM, we encourage students to use their first year to explore interests, get involved, and reflect on their values.
Want to support your student’s early steps? Start with a conversation. Here are a few questions to spark reflection:
- What are you curious to learn more about this year?
- Are there any clubs or campus jobs that interest you?
- What are your goals for the first semester?
Our Path to Career Success lays out year-by-year suggestions to help your student build confidence and momentum toward their goals.
